A brief word about the Center

The orientation of Jeddah municipality started to utilize geographic information systems from through the general department of urban planning, and by the year 1420; information and development unit has been established to be one of the departments that belongs to the projects and reconstruction agency and is responsible for geographic information systems, and from its goals is to put the fundamentals rules of building digital mappings and the development of geographic information systems in addition to developing applications serve other different departments in the municipality.
Seven years later, a decision # 11213 has been issued by the mayor on 20/2/1427 to establish the GIS Center and link it to all concerned departments that utilize the geographic information systems (GIS) within the municipality. Hence, the GIS Center became responsible for all the current and future work and projects belong to Jeddah municipality and concerned with geographic information systems. One of the fundamental goals that called for the establishment of the GIS Center is to unify the efforts in this field, and to avoid the inconsistency between the different departments involved in geographic information systems projects, which were often overlap with each other in respect to the scope of work and the outputs of the projects.
In addition to the above, the GIS center has many of the goals in which always trying to achieve, and from what comes in the forefront is updating and developing the base map along with the different digital layers, and cooperate with government and private sectors to update and exchange of information, with the development of applications for the various departments of Jeddah municipality and sub-municipalities with adopting and supporting GIS projects according to the need of each department, in addition to the training of municipality employees to be qualified to deal with the GIS Programs, in addition to nomination of new staff to work in the GIS field and supervising them.
